Oil Painting Retreat
25th September – 1st October
The tutor for this week is Martijn Valkenberg, a successful painter on the Island who also happens to be a gifted teacher.
He mostly works to commission. The subject of the event is still life painting which is a technique in itself but students
also learn a lot about composition and how ‘to sculpt’ in paint, and past students felt very lifted by their achievements
at the end of the week.
The event takes place in a house in the middle of a pine forest with lots of birds and lizards to keep you company. There
will be some sharing (maximum 2 to a room). There is a lovely swimming pool in the courtyard and a dedicated studio.
About the hosts:
Martijn Valkenberg has been painting still lifes for the past 20 years and makes his living working on commission. He has
been the tutor of Jennie Buckle who co-hosts the retreat for the last year and she was so impressed with his ability to
communicate instruction that she decided to start these art weeks so that others could benefit. Jennie completed a Fine Art
degree at Winchester Art School and will also be supporting Martijn with his students. Greg Arter, her brother, is the
main chef. All I can say is that we are very lucky to have him to prepare excellent healthy food and magical settings for us.
The event will suit all levels and anyone wanting to learn or improve their oil painting skills while enjoying a special
break in beautiful surroundings.
